PepsiCo Inclifted the curtain on its music partnership with Twitter,
saying it plans to offer free downloadable songs on its Twitter page and
streaming video of live concerts this summer.
The No. 2 soda
company says the first “pop-up” concert will be in late June. Followers
will be able to influence aspects of the concert, such as the set list,
by tweeting the names of songs they want played. Pepsi is staying mum on
which artists it has lined up for the concerts. But the company has
recently partnered with pop stars Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry in its
marketing campaigns.
Every Wednesday for the next year, Pepsi
will also post a quick video summary of music news for that week based
on an analysis of trending topics on Twitter.
Disney app
Walt
Disney Co.’s Disney Channel is releasing an application that will
enable the children’s network to be watched on Internet-connected mobile
devices. The app may become available next week, Disney Chief Executive
Officer Robert Iger said Wednesday at an investor conference in New
York. Comcast Corp. has agreed to pay for the service, he said.
FDA warning
The
Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers that a counterfeit
version of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drug Adderall is
being sold over the Internet. The FDA says the product purports to be
30-milligram Adderall tablets, but it does not contain the right
ingredients. The pills contain the pain drugs tramadol and acetaminophen
instead. The agency says the counterfeit tablets are white and round,
and they do not have any markings like letters or numbers. Genuine
Adderall tablets are an orange/peach color and have the letters “dp”
embossed on one side with the number 30 on the opposite side.
Home sales dip
.
A
gauge of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes fell in April from
nearly a two-year high in the previous month. The decline was the
biggest in a year. Still, sales are well ahead of last year’s level for
the same month, suggesting the housing market is improving slowly. The
National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that its index of sales
agreements dropped to 95.5, down from March’s reading of 101.1.
A reading of 100 is considered healthy. One year ago, the level was 83.5.
Verizon boosts broadband speed
Verizon
Communications Inc. doubled the speed of its most expensive FiOS
broadband Internet service, seeking an edge against cable
providers.Verizon will begin offering five speeds of service next month,
topping out at 300 megabits per second, according to a statement
Wednesday. Pricing will be announced in June, the company said. The new
top speed, up from a previous high of 150 megabits, is designed to let
consumers handle multiple Internet devices and more bandwidth-hogging
applications.
Staying connected
The
number of Internet connections will reach 18.9 billion by 2016, up from
10.3 billion in 2011, driven by a proliferation of smartphones, tablets
and other handheld devices, according to an annual survey by Cisco
Systems Inc.
The number of connections works out to almost 2.5 for
each person on Earth in 2016. India is expected to have the fastest
rate of Internet traffic growth, followed by Brazil and South Africa,
the survey found.
