Facebook Application - Facebook 'Sponsored Stories' Settlement: $10 Million

By -  David Murphy

Add caption
It's every Facebook user's worst nightmare: You make a joke about Viagra, another adult-related product, or even just some generic product or service that you don't necessarily want the entire world to know that you buy or use. Then, without your knowledge, your picture starts appearing next to thumbnails within Facebook's "Sponsored stories" Sidebar, implying that you have an interest in said product or service or would wholeheartedly recommend it to all of your friends.

Facebook settled a lawsuit regarding this exact practice back in late May – an affair brought forth in a San Jose, California federal court that had the potential to cost Facebook billions if the plaintiffs gained class-action status and ultimately prevailed. However, the details of Facebook's settlement weren't made public until this weekend: $10 million dollars. Specifically, Facebook plans to pay $10 million to charity as part of the settlement.

"California has long recognized a right to protect one's name and likeness against appropriation by others for their advantage," wrote U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh, as reported by Reuters.
Previous court documents make mention of the potential size the lawsuit could have achieved if it became a full, class-action issue: One in three Americans, which could have ended up costing Facebook a princely sum of money if it lost the suit.

Perhaps the most well-known tale to come from Facebook's "Sponsored Stories" is the fun problem that befell Nick Bergus, whose problems with Facebook's advertising techniques began when he posted a link to a 55-gallon drum of "Passion Natural Water-Based Lubricant" on his Facebook wall. Funny stuff, right?
What's wasn't as funny is when Facebook's algorithms picked up Bergus' alleged "interest" in the product and began running sponsored advertisements for the (immense amount of) lubricant – featuring his picture front-and-center.

"Other people start reporting that they're seeing it, too. A fellow roller derby referee. A former employee of a magazine I still write for. My co-worker's wife. They're not seeing just once, but regularly. Said one friend: 'It has shown up as one on mine every single time I log in,'" Bergus wrote.

According to Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg, the inherent value of a "Sponsored Story," or an advertisement based on a friend's personal "experience" with a product or service, is worth two to three times that of a conventional advertisement.
Except, of course, if you're just joking around.

Business Plan - Business Plan Competition Opens At BSC

By -  Joaquin Sendolo

Business Plan
Competition aimed at soliciting plans from Liberian business entrepreneurs for scrutiny to pave a way for start-up loan has opened at the Business Start-up Center (BSC).

Speaking in an interview with Daily Observer Business reporter recently at his Capitol Hill office, the Program Coordinator, B. Marcus Zarway disclosed that those to be accepted for the competition must be university graduates or graduating seniors who are less than 40 years of age.

The Business Start-up Center is a business institution formed by the University of Liberia in conjunction with Commerce Ministry with sponsorship from the Dutch based non-governmental organization SPARK.
It trains interested business entrepreneurs how to plan, start and run their businesses.

The center about a month and a half ago, completed training for ten business entrepreneurs, scrutinized them, and provided them US$10,000 each as a loan to start their businesses.

Giving some details about the selection process, Mr. Zarway said when interested entrepreneurs joining the competition submit their forms; a team of experts are selected to screen the candidates.

He said successful candidates are then sorted out and allowed to undergo training where they will be able to write business plan and defend it; after which when successful their names are submitted to partners for loan to start their businesses.

“Our own role in the giving of loan is we submit names of successful candidates who have met the criteria to partners for loan and not ourselves to provide it.  The loan is a soft loan, meaning that instead of giving duration of about six months to comply with payment, we give more time to the entrepreneurs to pay,” Zarway noted.

In terms of criteria qualifying an entrepreneurs for the loan, Mr. Zarway indicated that the academic status of the entrepreneur, the human resource capacity of his\her institution, the profitability of the business, and passion entrepreneur has for that business are taken into consideration.

In addition, he said “after the training entrepreneurs are asked how many people they can employ with his/her institution, and how far the business can go after three years from the day of starting.”

The BSC Program Manager and some Liberian business entrepreneurs just returned from a business forum in Rwanda.

He said the forum was called by BiD Network, an online partner that provides loan in the tone of US$10,000 to 1 million.

He said during the conference entrepreneurs from Liberia interacted with investors and there is a high hope for them to gain these investors’ favor to boost their businesses.

Web Development - Hudson Horizons Ranked #1 in Web Development For June 2012

By - Press Releases

Web Development
Saddle Brook, NJ, June 14, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Hudson Horizons is pleased to announce that the integrated web agency has been awarded the #1 ranking in web development by Top SEOs, an independent authority on internet marketing vendors. The accomplishment comes as no surprise, as Hudson Horizons has ranked at the top of the list for the past two years.

TopSEOs applies a strict guideline when ranking internet marketing agencies. For the category of web development, TopSEOs judges firms on their process, standard compliance, scalability, size and security, and maintenance. Hudson Horizons’ excellence in meeting these guidelines were most likely a result of past projects for Managing Americans and Bridge Marina.

Hudson Horizons implemented numerous web developments for Managing Americans, an extensive resource for professional development. A content management system conversion was performed so that the Managing Americans team can conveniently make changes to their site’s content. This will prove vital in offering the latest career success strategies. In addition to being well-organized, the SEO-friendly CMS will also help the website rank higher on search engines such as Google.

To further prove Managing Americans’ authority as an invaluable career resource, Hudson Horizons created custom professional surveys and forums, as well as an eCommerce solution integrated with Amazon.com for consumers to purchase development resources. Web developer for Hudson Horizons, Eric Solan, previously stated:

“Hudson Horizons worked closely with the ManagingAmericans.com team to develop an extensive website that is easy to use and provides information and opportunities for professionals of any field or career. By using the custom-built survey system, case study submissions and professional forums, users of ManagingAmericans.com will find endless information about their business discipline. Hudson Horizons looks forward to continuing its long-time web partnership with ManagingAmericans.com, LLC.”

The TopSEOs #1 ranking also was due in part to the work Hudson Horizons completed for Bridge Marina, an award-winning boatyard on New Jersey’s Lake Hopatcong.

Along with a site redesign, Hudson Horizons equipped the Bridge Marina team with the tools needed to enhance the user experience. To achieve this, the integrated web agency created several forms aimed at boat maintenance and appointment scheduling. Furthermore, website visitors can make reservations all from the comfort of their own home. Another strategic integration was that of a weather module that will allow potential customers to see real-time weather conditions of the boatyard.

Hudson Horizons is very pleased with the continuous recognition from TopSEOs as the web agency continues to excel in the web services they offer.

Project - Egypt Gets $3.7 bln Financing For Refinery Project

By -

Project
DUBAI (Reuters) - Investors in an Egyptian petroleum refinery project, led by Citadel Capital and Qatar Petroleum , have secured $3.7 billion in financing for the facility, the project operator said on Thursday.

The financing, put together by private equity firm Citadel, includes a $1.1 billion equity investment and is backed by a $2.6 billion debt package, Egypt Refining Company (ERC) said in a statement. Project partners include the Egyptian government.

The ERC project is to produce more than 4.1 million tonnes of refined products and oil derivatives annually, including more than 2.3 million tonnes of Euro V diesel per year. This is expected to cut Egyptian diesel imports by up to 50 percent.

The ERC said the refinery, on the outskirts of Cairo, will contribute $300 million in direct benefits to the state and create jobs. It is set to start operating in 2016.

"(The project) will reduce present-day diesel import needs by 50 percent, improve air quality in the Greater Cairo Area (and) help reduce Egypt's annual subsidy bill," ERC said.

A series of attacks on the natural gas pipeline that runs from Egypt to Israel has cut off supplies to the region and have forced Egypt to seek more fuel from abroad to meet rising demand from power generation and fuel needs for heavy vehicles.

Egypt's military rulers have sought to hike diesel imports as fuel shortages in central Cairo this year have caused long queues at petrol stations and traffic jams in some main thoroughfares, angering the public.
In its latest tender, Egyptian General Petroleum Corp (EGPC) was seeking to buy more than 1 million tonnes of gasoil, or diesel, from July to September, worth around $1 billion -- almost as much as it sought in the preceding six months.

FINANCING PACKAGE
Under the financing package for the refinery, EGPC has invested $270 million for a 23.8 percent interest in the project while Qatar Petroleum International committed over $362 million for a 27.9 percent stake, the statement said.

Citadel has directly and indirectly invested over $155 million and holds an equity stake of 11.7 percent.
Other participants include Gulf Arab investor, the World Bank's financing arm, the Netherlands' development bank FMO, Germany's private-sector lender DEG and European Investment Fund's InfraMed Fund.

EFG Hermes Investment Bank acted as placement manager for the equity component. The financing is backed by a $2.6 billion debt package arranged by ERC's financial advisor, French bank Societe Generale and made up of senior and subordinated debt issued to Asian and African development agencies and banks.
